Juliette Smith is an amateur oil painter based in Chicago, IL.
Juliette began painting in 2023 as a way to reconnect with her creativity and explore a deeper sense of purpose outside of a demanding corporate career. What started as a simple evening class quickly became an essential outlet for expression and exploration.
In early 2025, Juliette spent four months living in England for work. With no family nearby and few connections, she found herself immersed in solitude, an experience that pushed her further into her practice. She spent weekends exploring museums, studying the masters, and experimenting with new techniques. This period was a turning point: she began painting in unfamiliar environments, working from her own still life setups and references, and eventually embracing plein air painting. The artists she met through plein air work, along with those she continues to engage with online, remain a vital source of inspiration.
Juliette draws influence from both historical and contemporary painters. Her work is shaped by the atmospheric stillness of Edward Hopper, the soft impressionism of Alfred Sisley, and the bold brushstrokes and storytelling of Caroline Walker and Chloe Chlumecky.
Each year, Juliette donates a painting to Inspiration Corporation, a Chicago-based nonprofit serving individuals experiencing hunger and homelessness. It’s a cause close to her heart and a small way to give back through her art.
Still early in her journey, Juliette is focused on honing her craft and developing her artistic voice. She believes that with enough attention, any subject can become a worthy painting.
